The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

5.0

I had to read this book as part of a literature course at my university. I will say it as it is, this was not my choice.

At first, I hated this book so so much. I didn´t get it. I hated how Ishiguro wrote and the topic was just too weird for me. Most of the other students had similar problems with the book and or Ishiguro's writing style.
Then we started to apply literary theory to the book. For some reason, it started to make sense. We all started to find something that we liked. For me, it was the combination of memory and community. A theory by Astrid Erll. She explains the difference between collected and collective memory. (Sorry for that. I just enjoy literary theories a lot.)
The course ended in a turn paper, which meant for me I reread the book. This time I enjoyed it so much. I could see why Ishiguro wrote it that way.

This was a while back and since then I have read it once again. I think it has really become one of my favorite books.

I know that many people like this book and many don´t. My mom, for example, can´t understand why I love it.
I can just say, that you should give it a chance. It might surprise you.
