Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop by Danyel Smith

4.75

This was a very rewarding book, if uneven in the first few essays. The more recent artists are covered beautifully and lyrically, and I'm glad that details are preserved here. Note that throughout are woven vignettes about the author's upbringing and abusive household.

Would love to see more from Smith about her time at Vibe, whose early promotional CDs were life changing for many of us. Between her writing and her participation on the podcast "60 Songs That Changed the 90s", Smith is one to follow.
