On the House: A Washington Memoir by John Boehner
4.0
While I’m sure it’s no secret that I am not a personal fan of John Boehner, when I saw this memoir announced I was intrigued. Maybe it was the wine and cigarette on the cover that stood out to me or maybe it was the fact that Boehner is one of the prominent political figures I remember from my younger formative years. Regardless, if you are a connoisseur of political memoirs, From the House is one of the best. Boehner takes an “I’m retired and I do not give a fuck” approach and I thoroughly enjoyed it. He doesn’t romanticize his time in power or his relationships with other members. He calls groups of republicans senators “members of the knucklehead caucus” and “the freak show set” as well as recognizes his role in the Clinton impeachment was wrong and partisan. I appreciate that he calls out Donald Trump on his bullshit but it should be noted he waited until DJT left office to do so. From the House really provided a nice overview of 90’s-2000’s Congress and the members.
Obviously, there are a lot of Boehner’s actions that I do not agree with but overall this was a refreshing Washington memoir that highlighted a lot of failures instead of excessive bragging on mediocre successes.
