lunabbly 's review for:

Native Son by Richard Wright
2.0

Here's what I appreciated:
- The dialogue and how dialogue-heavy it was to explore nuances in humanity and feeling. The dialogue was powerful.
- There is an accompanying essay that followed the novel that explained how Bigger Thomas came to be and how Richard Wright shaped Bigger Thomas after five Black men in his life.
- Bigger Thomas' internal dialogue and the blend into spoken/verbal communication with others.

What I did NOT appreciate:
- Sexual violence against women that was used to explore how it can potentially humanize a Black man and his masculinity.
- The lack of passionate commentary and concern for Bessie's life. Even if Richard Wright wanted to mimic real life, he could have extended more love and care from Bigger Thomas to Bessie, especially after Thomas had murdered her and the body was discovered. Wright repeatedly wrote that Thomas forgot about Bessie, which I just found... unreal and sad.

I give this a 2-star review because it was fine. Not the best work that I've read, but the substance of the dialogue is powerful.
