Haunting

One of the best novels I've read in a long time.

Reminiscent of Patricia Highsmith, the narrative is structured around suspense - we know Michael did something terribly wrong, but we don't know what for a long time. And by the time we find out, we've come to know his pain, and sympathise with his own loss and grief, and therefore we are ready to understand the choice he makes, and how he justifies it, and how inevitable as it is, it leads to more pain.

A study in collateral damage - personal and political.
