A Soft Place to Land by Janae Marks

This was a really sweet, simple story.

The thing I was most frustrated about is the narrator and her relationship with music. In the beginning, she clearly establishes that she wants to become a film scorer and wants to take piano lessons. But her narration throughout doesn't really convince me that she and music are inseparable. You could substitute music for almost anything else (sports, dance, painting) and not much would change.

As someone whose career is in music and has friends who compose, I really just wanted a deeper connection with her chosen passion. Like, if anything in the story inspired her to write a melody, or she heard music in her head when there was none. Or if she often got distracted in school or conversations because she was hearing or listening to music. You get the idea. I just needed more of that.

It's still a lovely book that I would easily recommend to kids.
