If You Want to Write: A Book about Art, Independence and Spirit
by Brenda Ueland
This is my fifth or sixth time reading this book, but the first in four or five years, and the first time since I started my Goodreads account. This book has meant a lot to me, and often I find myself getting something new out of it with each read. I purposefully chose to start my year with this book as I see it as a sort of reset or a reminder to be my authentic self and write through my Truth.
Although it was written over eight decades ago, I find that so much of this book still resonates today. The thoughts and writings of well known artists and writers is fascinating and supplements Brenda Ueland's thoughts well, but what I adore most is when she includes the writings of her students. I found myself rereading the student short stories often.
This book was suggested to me by an old friend years ago, and this is one that I now suggest to other friends. Even if they don't have much interest in writing, I still think they can get something out of this book. A great start to my new year reading this book, so much so that I think I will read this book around the New Year, every year.
