Losing Control by Rachael Stewart

4.0

A second chance romance written by Rachael Stewart is a combination I couldn't let pass me by.

Cain O'Connor left his fiancée and family after a huge row. Seven years later, he's back after the tragic death of his father and younger brother. However, life has moved on during his absence...although some things remain the same. Alexa "Lexi", is the only woman he has ever loved, however, she betrayed him but still…

Alexa is struggling to keep her head above water since the death of her husband and father-in-law. As the new CEO of the O'Connor family business, she has no time for herself and the board members are losing confidence in her ability to keep the company afloat. When Cain O'Connor comes back, he makes it clear he's there to support her in her role, Yet the fire of desire burns deep between them. Only, will the past come back and haunt them?

It's complicated doesn't come close to describing the relationship between Cain and Alexa. Their attraction, lust and love for each other are as highly charged as its ever been but each has a valid reason for keeping away from the other. The narrative is angsty, filled with electrically charged scenes of attraction between the two flawed characters. Both are guilty of believing presumptive thoughts about the other's actions. It's heartbreaking and frustrating in equal measure.

The happily ever after is a stark contrast to the journey and progress made by the protagonists. The author making sure the drama ends on a high. Still, I wonder how these two characters would fare in the real world… I'd like to think they are meant for each other but I'm not so sure.

Overall, I enjoyed this as much as I have the other books I've read by Ms Stewart. It's fast-paced, drawing the reader into the story however, some readers may struggle with one aspect of the storyline.
