The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie

5.0

The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie is innovative in the “last stand” subgenre of fantasy because it offers both perspectives of the conflict and neither is particularly more righteous than the other or more deserving of the North, neither are most of the characters sympathetic (at least not initially). None of these people feel like they should “win”, nor do they seem to care about winning, and yet here we are, at the pearly gates, chapter in and chapter out.

And it fucking rocks! Seriously, probably the best book of its kind I’ve read. Amazing characterization and pacing, excellent flow of scenes that keep you glued to the action, and speaking of which, action, wow! It’s good! It really is. I had to read it interrupted because I have been busy in the last month, and yet I never felt like I lost too much interest. It only took two or three pages to win me back.

I’m not sure which one I liked more, Best Served Cold or The Heroes. They were both significantly better than the First Law trilogy, though that one is pending on a revaluation one day. Overall, my opinion of First Law is that it remains good but flawed as a trilogy, but “The Great Leveller” has been nothing short of brilliant so far.

P.S. I picture Ishri very differently to how Abercrombie describes her, which is odd, but I really like her character for some reason (she's so crazy, lol). My favourite point of view was probably Gorst, but they were all pretty alright. Except for Tunny. I'm sorry, I just didn't give a shit about him unfortunately.

Okaayyy....
