A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James

5.0

Beautifully and artfully crafted, "A Brief History" is a powerful book that is well worth a significant investment of your time and attention. James Marlon manages to successfully flesh out each individual character you meet, from the dons of the Jamaican Liberation Party to a reporter for the "Rolling Stones," and make you feel for them on some level. Marlon is successful in this, in part, by maintaining a significant level of authenticity for each of his characters, from their voice to their goals and values. This is especially impressive given the sheer historical scope of the book in that Marlon not only makes his characters authentic, but showcases how they change over time and react to historical events.

In short, I highly recommend giving this book a read. I've genuinely never read anything like it, and Marlon's thoughtful prose and attention to detail makes this book an exhilarating journey from start to finish.
