Edit #3
I've been going back and forth on this book for an entire day now. This is my final review of it. I thought I'd end up liking it more than I did. The ending is what really brought down the score for me, because it negates everything that happened in the book prior to that. What purpose did the tournament even have when the books end because of her two stupid friends who took part in the ball? She gave up her identity and her self-preservation skills just for those two? That scene could have happened in the middle of the book and it wouldn't have changed anything. The ending made the entirety of the second half useless: the tournament, her winning it (don't even get me started on that as it wasn't even a fair victory, somehow Sylvia won... Ok, I guess). The first half is extremely slow at the start. Also I have a problem with names in this book, there are too many and similar sounding. There is a lot of exposition in various part, and a lot of lore drop that bored me after a while. I hated that the slowburn ended so quickly. And also I need to add that this book barely brings anything original to the table, it's all recycled tropes and plot: heir of the lost empire, brooding ML, enemies-to-lovers, tournament in three phases, the couple not being able to touch each other... Just because the sauce is different doesn't mean the ingredients aren't the exact same.
