Pretty standard mystery bearing the taint of when it was written (clunky prejudices and casual sexual harassment). The red herrings were there just to be red herrings, not to explore a higher truth and the narrator seemed more a projection of what the author thought was a man’s man than a real person. Oh well, I do wish I could have a bowl of fish chowder at Gert’s now.
