A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
5.0
I think this is probably the fastest I have ever finished a story, and the most I have cried at the end of one. It took me just a couple of hours to read and then...the tears flowed. I think it grasped my heart even more due to the fact I work in oncology and having lost family to cancer. All the factors that can go into it we’re identified in this story. I loved that this was from the point of view as an adolescent son. I loved his circumstances weren’t ideal or perfect because that is what made this real. Im a sucker for stories that would fall under the “magical realism” spectrum, and this definitely hooked me. As Patrick Ness said “humans are complicated beasts” and this story grapples and faces the contradictory nature and truth of being human. As much as I cried I really did love this story, and everyone should read it.
