The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss

4.0

A shipwrecked family on a deserted island, and there is now doubt that they will survive and flourish. Johann D. Wyss is a master story teller and keeps the pace of his story moving. Although somewhat dated (e.g. daily religions activity; a woman's role - "the mother"; killing animals happens often for various reasons). Most of the dated items can be easily explained. I feel certain that it fairly portrayed what life would have been like if shipwrecked in 1800's.

The reading was not especially easy, and sent me to the dictionary more than once (e.g. onager) and I'm sure that it was the first time I have ever seen the word rigmarole in print.
