Mimi Herman has created a beautiful southern setting into which she has put some unforgettable characters. There is the protagonist Mattie who is earnest and strong minded, her best friend Lynette who is thoughtful and giving, Aggie, Lynette's little sister, who is a very special soul, and the Kudzu King who is too good to be true - plus so many others that drive this heartfelt story that explores the fine line between being a young woman and still being a kid. Infused with the real-life story of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's disastrous campaign to promote kudzu in the early 1940s, The Kudzu Queen is a very special novel, the kind that teaches you something while also being highly entertaining.
