Changing Places
by David Lodge
Great book. Funny, well written, interesting plotlines, a real breeze to read. Some of the social commentary is a little dated and/or tread over--the novel was published in 1975--but that is easily forgivable, considering there is still a lot in there which resonates today. There are some post-modern(ish) flourishes in the book, light meta/self awareness, stylistic experiments, that sort of thing. But, they never become annoying and they all keep the story foregrounded. There is still something going in beneath/between the meta-text and experimentation, which is something that can be lost in some post-modern texts.
Lodge is clearly a bright guy who reads a lot. His sentences are sometimes long, but always with purpose. His prose is rhythmic, his timing is great. No sections go on too long and the book ends right where it should. This book is begging to be adapted into a series and/or film. This is a great read with lots of earned laughs and always a go-to when recommending books and/or authors to people. This one is highly recommended.
