Heart of the Fae by Emma Hamm

2.0

✴︎ I really wanted to like this. There was so much potential and I highlighted some great excerpts, but in the end it was a disappointing read.

✴︎ The Characters :
The main characters interacting with side characters did a lot of heavy lifting in making this book readable to me. I found the mains’ backstories interesting, but there wasn't much more to them than “strong beautiful female character” and “rough brooding male character”. I wish they had been fleshed out.

✴︎ The Romance :
The couple didn't interact enough, talk about themselves or what was going on. I highlighted some great excerpts about how they feel for each other, but it wasn't backed up by the writing. Much telling and not very much showing. Much lust, not enough connection, etc.

Something that bothered me :
SpoilerSorcha needs Eamonn to leave with her so she can save her people, but he says no and she's like “Well, I'll convince him eventually.” So for months she tries and fails off-page—and his continual decision just doesn't affect their relationship for some reason? They should have argued and talked about it on page.

✴︎ The Plot :
After a certain point, the plot was put on hold because the author didn't want things to happen yet, I guess? (What should have been happening was the couple actually getting to know each other, but no.) When things do start happening again, nothing is properly explained and the world-building goes from intriguing to a Disneyland facade. Maybe things were just kept to be explained in the next book, but I won't be reading it.
