A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
dark
emotional
mysterious
slow-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

It has really taken me some time to find the right words to explain my experience with this book. Even now, I'm truly very conflicted about both the storage and from a main character. In the beginning, the mahor theme is some misogyny in the academic environment. Not only is she not allowed to enter her desire to college, but she also was a victim of sexual assaults. And it was swept under the rug, and she was instead villianized. The beginning of the book she is dealing with the after-effects of the situation. The opportunity arises to go and compete to work, her favorite author's estate after his passing. This is where we learn, she is racist, but she was also conscious and shameful of her racism but still racist. Another student from the college she goes to was there one that is in the program that she is not allowed to be and he just so happens to also be from the country hers is at war/ has some animosity towards. So a lot of their first interactions are fueled by her jealousy and racism towards this particular student that is there to study the late author and write a thesis.
Eventually, they decide to team up and figure out the truth behind the author success and who really wrote his stories. They both are also very confounded by the mystery of the fae king, and we're to uncover the truth determinating whether it's existence is indeed fact or fiction.
As the plot continued, the book was mildly interesting. But I do not think I will continue what this series. I just wasn't fully invested in it. Also seemed like it came to a well wrapped conclusion.
