The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall

4.0

This third edition of the Penderwicks series finds them getting ready to vacation separately! Rosalind is off to New Jersey with her best friend, their father new stepmother and stepbrother are off to England for research, and the rest of the sisters and Aunt Claire head to Point Mouette, Maine. Luckily Jeffrey is coming along as well. With Rosalind gone it falls to Skye to take charge as the OAP (Oldest Available Penderwick); a job she's not so sure she can handle, especially after incidents involving bad dogs and skateboarding heart breakers. In the meantime they make new friends, Batty discovers a new talent, and Jeffrey's life is changed forever.

Once again [a:Jeanne Birdsall|155829|Jeanne Birdsall|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1244144306p2/155829.jpg]'s book is delightful and wonderfully narrated by Susan Denaker. The adventures are at turns both humorous and heartbreaking, and Birdsall proves that a present day realistic fiction novel can be written without adding references that will date the novel prematurely. While Jeffrey's life changing event is a little too coincidental, everything else is pitch perfect, and it's a perfect book for the last few weeks of summer.
