An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith by Barbara Brown Taylor
5.0
Barbara Brown Taylor writes alongside a handful of giants who have deeply informed my thinking and my life experience -- authors like Buechner, Capon, Nouwen, Lewis. Reading this book, I realized that these writers make my list of giants in part because they stand shoulder to shoulder with all of us regular, struggling schmucks and then tell the truth about it.
I read through this book slowly, absorbing a chapter or so each week, and thinking carefully about how I live my day to day life. It has changed how I look at my body, how I walk upon the earth, how I categorize the things and people around me, my attitude when cleaning my house, the way I interact with people in my neighborhood, and by giving me grace in my deep struggles with organized religion.
It was a book to savor, and I will undoubtedly return to its pages many times in the future.
