A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
5.0
I have nobody to blame, but myself. I asked my book group for a recommendation for a sad book and they delivered.
Holy crap. No, really...HOLY CRAP. This is hands down the most tragic book I've ever read, taking you on a harrowing journey into the dark side of our society and what is left of one of it's victims. It's a masochistic's dream. So, why read it???
I have never felt so connected to characters in a book before. (I'm not the only one...there is even an instagram page for the BOOK!) I have never read something so raw and real. I have never been taken on such an emotional journey — literally yanked back and forth between the darkest and lightest sides of humanity. I have never read anything like it.
It's hard for me to believe that Hanya Yanagihara doesn't have firsthand experience with what she writes about...it's that real. My God, I hope she doesn't, but it's inconceivable that a writer could be as brilliant as she is without having been there.
This book changed me.
