King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

‘Zoya of the lost city.
Zoya of the garden.
Zoya bleeding in the snow.
YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO SURVIVE THE FALL.’

No one knows what Nikolai Lantsov endured in his country’s civil war and he wants it to stay that way. Now enemies assemble at Ravka’s debilitated borders and the young king must find a way to fill his country’s coffers, form new alliances and prevent a growing threat to the Grisha Army that was once great. However, a dark magic within him becomes increasingly powerful each day, threatening to ruin everything he has created. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller Nikolai travels to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to conquer the demon inside him. He is willing to risk it all to salvage himself and his country, but some secrets are not meant to stay hidden and some wounds are not meant to heal.

This book was spectacular! This book is set 3 years after the Shadow and Bone series and a year after the Six of Crows series. I found it really intriguing to follow a story about the new king of Ravka (Nikolai Lantsov) and his ‘crew.’ I loved reading Zoya’s POV and the flashbacks to her past, they really enabled me to understand her character better. I also very much enjoyed Nina’s POV and her separate story alongside Nikolai and his crew’s story. In my opinion it was incredibly interesting to see the new relationships she built and how she dealt with the events of the Six of Crows duology. The cliff hanger though!
