Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang

2.0

What I liked:
- Thomil’s opening chapter set the scene very well and left me wanting to find out more
- I loved the coding-style magic system & this felt quite unique
- the first few chapters about Sciona taking the test and starting work were v interesting and I enjoyed the writing
- Carra’s hero moment towards the end (crushing one of the villains)
- the Kwen leaving Tiran together at the end

What I disliked:
- the way that every key theme was discussed in such an overt and clunky manner, with no subtlety, nuance or grey areas
- how sciona was outraged at the way the men treated her, yet remained oblivious to her own racism (which often mirrored the sexism she experienced herself) for most of the book
- sciona naming it ‘the Freynan mirror’ when the key pieces of research came from the Kwen
