An Extraordinary Union
by Alyssa Cole
I enjoyed this quick read, but since I haven’t yet read too many romance novels, I didn’t always know how it stacks up within the genre in general. My library app kept recommending this book to me, so I decided to give it a read, especially as I have heard that the author Alyssa Cole is a great romance author and one of only a handful of Black authors as successful in the genre as she is-I hope to see more women of color become successful in the historical romance genre!
It’s a detective historical interracial romance story set in the South during the Civil War, so there is definitely some difficult subject matter to work through that the author has to balance, and I appreciate that she doesn’t sugarcoat the realities of enslavement and the brutality of the Confederacy while weaving a plot centered around espionage and falling in love.
I will probably try out some of the author’s other books within at least this series, and am curious what her sci-fi romance(s) are like as well.
