Pulpy. Flat characters. Predictable plot resolved with a bit of deus ex machina.

It was a bit as if when each character was introduced via stereotype, he (all the perspective characters are male) had an initial direction and velocity and (much like space) continued in that predictable path.

Can't be that bad because I read it and the following two members of the trilogy.
