Thoroughly enjoyed this! I would die for Eglamarck.
The author herself says this is a children's book, and indeed, the MC Oliver is only 12 years old. Yet none of it feels juvenile. In fact, it's the kind of children's book that looks at the follies of adults—or human beings in general—through the eyes of a kid, with such depictions of not one, but two mobs, and offers some interesting insights into mob mentality. I also appreciate the fact that, while Oliver does not refuse to save his village out of spite, neither does the narrative force him to forgive the people who have wronged him, but rather posits that this hurt will be something he has to live with and learn to navigate even after the story ends, as he grows up in the future. There's frustration and resignation and acceptance there, and I'd say this sort of outlook makes this book actually more mature than many non-children's books out there.
That said, there are still a lot of wholesome interactions between Oliver and his familiar the armadillo and with another friend that are funny and heartwarming to read. I'm here for the sarcastic armadillo.
