I had put this book on hold after a podcast recommendation and I was pulled in with the cult storyline. What I didn’t realize was that heavy magical realism element would come in half way through the book and man… I struggle with that. I’m torn because I found the characters interesting and I wanted to know more about them and I truly wish it had simply explored the beginning set up more instead of dipping into time travel.

I also struggled with the message the author was trying to send. I completely agree that women should have control over their own bodies but I really just felt like it was said so many times I was being hit over the head with it. There’s an art to subtlety and this really had none. I would’ve much preferred I was shown the importance of these issues instead of blatantly being told over and over again.

I think this book had a ton of potential and interesting side characters; however, I don’t think it came anywhere close to hitting that potential. The writing is good, I’m just left feeling meh.
