This had so much potential, but turned out disappointing. I loved The Midnight Library, which despite its bleak beginning quickly began to feel hopeful. But this book felt depressing throughout until the very end. It was so obvious that Hendrich was a manipulative psychopath that it was incredibly frustrating to watch Tom just drift along in his wake, believing his bullshit. It was irritating how passive and naive Tom was for almost the entire book. I know the point was that Tom was finally realising the truth, but I just didn't find that long overdue epiphany satisfying after the frustration of most of the book. I wished there had been more scenes of making history come alive in the classroom.
