The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

3.5

Hmmmm, I feel rather torn about this.
I really liked getting to finally meet Sabetha, and see the Gentleman Bastard's get into shenanigans in the past timeline but goddamn. This series is really evolving into something I just can't quite find myself to care about. The reveals that
Locke is potentially a reincarnated bondsmage and the prophecy that he will lose a key, a crown and a child and the whole thing with the Falconer coming back and weird magi politics uggh
is just ... I don't think this series is going in the direction I wanted, or perhaps it's more accurate that in general I am not in this for the long haul. I don't know really, just that this felt rather underwhelming and confusing and not in keeping with the tone of the first two books.
I am curious if in a few years/when book four comes out I will feel a desire to reread these and in doing so will have a better time and pay attention to the right things knowing what is in store a bit more. We shall see. I read another review that said this feels like it's gone high fantasy despite the series starting out as more fun thievery-in-a-fantasy-setting vibes and I feel like that's what has turned me off in this. Things are getting complicated and the tone has changed a lot and I just don't understand the world enough or care about the characters enough to be invested in all that. Still, a very fun ride and I might give the fourth book a go when it eventually comes out.

I did enjoy seeing Locke become a completely flustered mess around Sabetha, nothing better than a man who is down bad for a hot competent lady.
