This novella has tapped into a very specific sub interested of mine which is when horror mixes with fungus. Ive seen a few books incorporating fungus into horror and I feel this is done really well.

Intially I was not a big fan of the writing style the speaking to the reader has never really worked for me. However once I became used to it. It was less of a bother and I found myself really liking the main character. I'm excited to see the author has written a second book with the same characters which I am excited to read.

I loved the use of nonbinary pronouns for our main character and the discussion on the use of gendered language as well as gender norms throughout alrhough although this can sometimes come across as more telling rather than showing. The retelling of the fall of the house of usher was an interesting take that fleshed out allot of what was intriguing from Poes original story.

Overall made me really keen to read the second book in this series and I will be keeping T Kingfisher on my authors to read list.
