Set on 17th century Cornwall, our main character, the charming Lady Dona St. Columb, escapes the stifling London life and stole to Navron house by the edge of the creek. She meets a French gentleman pirate, and a love affair ensues. Instead of mere romance, this is also a critique on social restrictions to women at that time (maybe still relatable even now to some degree). Expect action (the excitement!) and du Maurier's trademark atmospheric writing (you almost feel as if you were there), but not intimate scenes, unfortunately. Oh they happened alright, but for some reason the writer opted to leave it out from the book.
