Mud Vein
by Tarryn Fisher
Writing this review is hard. Because this book is like nothing I have ever read. It is heavy, complex, and like a puzzle. For over three-fourth's of the book I was scratching my head trying to figure out what was going on. People would ask me what it was about and I could only respond "I honestly don't know, I haven't figured it out yet" It definitely makes you think out of the box.
When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken. If she wants her freedom, she has to take a close look at her past. But, her past has a heartbeat…and her kidnapper is nowhere to be found. With her survival hanging by a thread, Senna soon realizes this is a game. A dangerous one. Only the truth can set her free.
This is not a happily-ever-after story. This book has feelings, the words bleed off the pages. The writing is beautiful, detailed, and executed flawlessly. Tarryn Fisher creates complex and moving characters that have serious emotional hang-ups. They make you feel despite if you can relate or not.
My advice is to just jump in, don't look for answers, and allow Senna to tell her story. Pay close attention, and when all the reasons are revealed be prepared to be shocked. This is an emotionally unforgettable journey. And while I couldn't relate to Senna I found myself rooting for her. I felt myself understanding her and wanting her to heal, love, succeed, and live.
“You’ve been silent your whole life. You were silent when we met, silent when you suffered. Silent when life kept hitting you. I was like that too, a little. But not like you. You are a stillness. And I tried to move you. It didn’t work. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t move me. I heard everything you didn’t say. I heard it so loudly that I couldn’t shut it off. Your silence, Senna, I hear it so loudly.”
