Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande

5.0

Profound

That is my feeling in finishing Being Mortal. As the daughter of two doctors, I have seen the toll practicing medicine takes on humans. I think what Dr. G describes as medicine robs patients of their humanity in dying also creates endless frustration in doctors who strive to do what our society wants from them that is impossible to give.

I do think that the questions he poses that we should ask of a terminal or dying patient sounds much easier than it really is. Most people, don't know what they want. Some do, but most don't know until they have some experience under their belt. And it may change.

This is an amazing book for people like me, just starting to have to manage elderly parents and loved ones reaching this stage. I hope he can help change our world. He's started me thinking how to change mine.
