challenging dark emotional informative reflective medium-paced

Rather than jumping from fact to fact, the author explores a lot of the feelings and experiences of people around Emmett during his life and the night of his murder, and Mississippi's culture before and since. It feels like less of a pile of facts than a story told in a southern style, meandering but always relevant to and circling back to the main point.
