The Marsh King's Daughter by Karen Dionne
4.0

I liked the plot a lot, and as a book about an abducted girls daughter, I couldn’t help but think back to reading Room by Emma Dongahue for the first time. While Room was revolutionary for me, I thought that the Marsh Kings Daughter lacked a certain depth to the story. I did enjoy the alternating chapters between Helena’s childhood where she’s oblivious to her mothers situation, and the adult version of her. I thought that the adult chapters were weaker in character development than that childhood chapters, but overall it was a good attempt at what life could be like if you find out at 12 that your Father is actually your Mothers kidnapper. Easy to read, a little predictable, but the main character also names the predictability throughout anyway so it doesn’t feel too bad.
