the first part of the book is a little slow—not because of pacing issues but because the author is introducing everything you need to know for the rest of the story—but once i got through it i couldn’t put this down. i’m realizing that i love these kinds of generational stories, especially ones that cover such important topics. motherhood, racism/colorism, intergenerational trauma, etc. i was very fond of both jude and kennedy, how their relationships with their mothers were shaped so intensely by the choices desiree and stella each made when they were so young. and reese!! what a lovely character.
