As an: “I’ll buy and read anything Cassandra Clare writes” stan, completely in love with the Shadowhunters universe I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to get into a new series written outside of this universe, but MY GOODNESS did this book deliver!

Cassandra has really outdone herself creating a world which reads in a sweet spot between historical fiction and historical fantasy (I’m not sure others would agree with this assessment but this is the best that I could do to give it a subgenre). The play off Jewish/Christian literature   was a very interesting nuance.

The book was complete with a prologue  masterfully crafted throughout the chapters, revealing enough at a time to help you digest the history of the world, religion and magic system as well as providing another dimension to the story and characters. Speaking of, the characters are complex and loveable with many unresolved mysteries surrounding each which begs for a sequel.

The story was definitely a slow burner which is to be expected for the first book in a new series, and so much great work was done immersing the reader into the world and plot line. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and cannot wait for book 2. IM INVESTED. Oh, and the cover…. 🤤🤤 5⭐️
