How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie

2.0

Must start this off by saying I’m a really big Bella Mackie fan so I was mad excited for this book. But wow, am I relieved it’s over.

Take this with a pinch of salt, as BM is clearly a talented and engaging writer. I just could not get on board with HTKYF, and all in all felt it landed pretty flat.

Our protagonist Grace was frankly, just a bit of a dick. One minute she’s a scorned anti-heroine, the next she’s at best a hypocritical, self-righteous sociopath.

I don’t believe you have to relate or even empathise with the protagonist to enjoy a book, but I do believe you have to be able to root for them. I can’t say I was rooting for Grace.
