Personally, this was not an enjoyable book. It took me forever to get through and was generally unpleasant. I understand that this classic is a very famous piece of literature, and in its own twisted way, is quite beautiful, but I did not enjoy it. The characters are so flawed to the point where it’s frustrating to read! The pace is slow, the storyline progresses through multiple lifetimes, and the family tree is confusing. I think it was Brontë’s intention to write a romance so dark and like no other, which I respect. I can’t believe she was even allowed to publish this book given the time period she lived in. If you like romances, I’d recommend this book because it is probably like nothing you’ve ever read before. Note: the book includes a lot of casually written domestic abuse, and characters starving themselves.
