I finally finished this book. It's short but it took me a long time to read because I found it really slow going. There were some comical aspects and the last 25 or so pages were more interesting, but I don't think I could read it again. Definitely not the first Gaskell book you should read. I've watched the first half of the Cranford mini series, which is actually a combination of three of Gaskell's books, and I've enjoyed that so far.
