I was very much looking forward to this read, as I devoured the first book in the duo. I was a bit disappointed to find this one dragging a bit more - there were some sequences where I couldn’t put it down, and others that I felt like I was really pulling myself through the water to get through. One big thing I missed was the significance of the astrolabe - from the first book, I couldn’t remember what it’s purpose was, and once it got a bit more cleared up, it just felt so wishy-washy. I understand that the characters were being manipulated as to it’s real purpose, but I would’ve liked to have a more solid grasp on the stakes. The romance between Nicholas and Etta was one of the biggest highs for the first book, and I just wish we got more of that here, even in the ending. It would’ve been great to have the ending highlight Etta with her whole family, too, instead of another flashback.
