The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

5.0

"Above all, avoid falsehood, every kind of falsehood, especially falseness to yourself."

I loved this book. Many people find it dark and depressing, but I never found it overly so. Yes, dark things happen. Yes, people do terrible things, but there is so much complexity to the characters and situations. It really is brilliantly constructed.

The story focuses around three brothers: Dmitri, who is passion; Ivan, who is intellect; and Alyosha, who is faith. But this isn't a look at caricatures, each of these brothers is much more than that. They are complex, fascinating individuals. It's difficult to say if I have a favorite among them, though it might possibly be Ivan.

This is a book that is begging me to reread it, only a few days after having finished it. I want to get a physical copy for rereading, as I think this is one that I will revisit many times in the future.
