The Enchantment of Lily Dahl by Siri Hustvedt
4.0
Yes!! Still love you Siri. Now I am cursing myself for putting your other two remaining novels in the queue for so long. Found this early gem in a second hand bookstore that is somehow similar and very different from everything else I have read. It is brainy, but not so apparently so. It is more visceral, twisted and disturbing, more Paul Austery if you can say that, but better. I cannot point to particular stylistic elements that stand out, it just all works seemingly effortlessly, which means there was definitely a lot of effort put into it. The characters all breath with life, and the setting, rural Minnesota with its peculiar set of inhabitants perfectly combines the depressingly mundane with gothic mystery.
