Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman
1.0

I wanted to like this book. I tried to like this book. I failed. Ghost Eaters by Clay McLeod Chapman is about addiction. Erin’s ex has died and their friend Tobias claims to know how to bring him back. They must go to an abandoned house and perform a seance. They have to get “haunted” by taking a pill called Ghost. Desperate to see Silas again, Erin follows Tobias on this journey and her world falls apart. To start with, let me say that I listened to the audiobook and I did not enjoy the narrator. Elizabeth Rodgers grated on my nerves. The story itself is trying hard to be scary and all it succeeds at is being gross. It isn’t gory. But there is lots of bile. I didn’t think the “revenants” were depicted in a way that made them terror inducing. I found everyone in the book to be utterly dull and unpleasant. I didn’t care what happened to them. There wasn’t enough of a connection between Erin and Silas for me to believe that she would throw herself so heartily into this world. The story is scattered and there are pieces flung about that never get picked up again. The twists weren’t that twisty. I found myself thinking “I don’t like this book” while I listened to it. It feels like the author couldn’t decide what cliche to follow through with and so he included them all. At some point we randomly devolve into a orgy of cannibalism and so the answer was to set everything on fire? There were bits here that had potential and could have been polished from turd to gemstone maybe, but that effort wasn’t put into it. Terrible dialogue at times. The best thing it has going for it is the cover, which I do quite like. 1/5 stars. No thanks.
