It's really hard to talk about this book without giving at least some plot point and surprises away. I went in completely blind since it received a Hugo nom and I saw people on reddit talking about it. IMHO, that's the proper way to experience this book. If you like science fiction, chances are you'll enjoy this.
I really liked the unconventional setting and the wider universal understanding of humanity as a potential danger. I also really enjoyed how the book completely broke with my expectations. It starts out as a fairly innocuous Harry Potter in Space-type deal: young adults are being sorted into houses and then from there on into professions. This is fairly enjoyable, but somewhat standard fare. However, the plot takes a surprising turn and all you assumed you knew about this universe so far it completely uprooted. And then it happens again and again.
The main characters undergo a series of developments and changes. There's real growth here and more then some whiplash for the reader - in a good way. Reading this felt kind of like being on a roller coaster, which is nice.
However, I found the last 20% or so a bit harder to get through as it stretched out a bit longer than I thought was fitting. Maybe that's just me, but the whole "This is the very last universe for real so now we need to be morally just"-aspect kind of fell a bit flat for me. That doesn't detract from what is otherwise a really enjoyable and unconventional book, though.
