What a fantastic book - Teresa has well earned the 5-star rating with this one!
I'm a glutton for books about WW1 and WW2, and this one nears the top for my favourite. It was so refreshing to have a book written by a woman, from the women's perspective during the war, and as a nurse of all things. Almost all of the women in my family were trench nurses, so I know that it was no joke, but for the author to write out the experiences and decline of physical and mental health as the war progressed in such an eloquent and candid way is what really topped it all off for me.
At times this book was hard to read, but not in a way that was negative at all, but in following the disjointed thoughts of someone going through immense trauma, through starvation, through literal Hell - brilliant and captivating!
This book made me cry, it made me smile, it made me hold my breath and to cheer. This had it all, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially if you're interested in WW2 stories.
