The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley
3.0
3-1/2 Stars
I’m giving this an extra half star purely for the structure of the book. Alternating back and forth between the present and the few days leading up to it, you slowly begin to learn about each of the characters and their backstories. A group of friends off on holiday at a remote lodge in Northern England to celebrate New Year’s. But all is not well between them and secrets start coming to light, one of which leads to murder.
A couple of things made this less than stellar for me. First, nearly all the characters are unlikable (if that doesn’t bother you, then you will really enjoy this). Second, I figured out the murderer and victim (you’re left guessing until nearly the end) at about the halfway point. There was also an unrelated serial killer on the loose nearby which had nothing at all to do with the story except to ratchet up the tension. It seemed unnecessary to me when the isolation of their location helped provide more than enough dramatic tension.
On the positive side, this is a fast read, with an exciting denouement. Good read for a cold winter’s night (just as long as you’re not stuck in a remote lodge somewhere)!
