Yee takes us back into the beloved world of Avatar, once again leaning into the darkness and grit that Aang's story kept its hands free of. This book wasn't what I expected, despite having read its predecessor. I should have been prepared for politicking and subversion, but it was heavier on that then I anticipated. We didn't see much spirit world, and Yangchen's search for a loved one took a backburner rather than playing into the main plot.
The narrative felt as if it wanted to be too many things at once, and it made me wonder if Yee wanted to write a much longer book than he was allowed. Taken with that grain of salt, I did enjoy the story we got. I only wish that it were more fleshed out.
