The Victorian and the Romantic: A Memoir, a Love Story, and a Friendship Across Time by Nell Stevens

4.0

I challenged myself at the start of this year to read more non-fiction books, and it's a good thing I did, or else I wouldn't have come across this book. I really enjoyed this. For me, this book came across a two-for-one deal. On the one hand, you had a memoir about a woman trying to get through the harsh world of academia and balancing a messy personal life alongside it. And then, on the other hand, you get the history of Elizabeth Gaskell, a woman I knew almost nothing about before starting this novel but now can't wait to learn more about. Though time has separated Elizabeth Gaskell and Nell Stevens, and though there are vastly different expectations of women now than there were in Gaskell's time, I felt there was an eerily similar vibe that connected these two women and their stories across the barrier of time.
