The Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard

Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.

I cannot get into the book to safe my life.. Things are moving so quick and not reasonable at all ?
Do not understand the world. I feel like some stuff was explained but other was left for imagination ? Idk. 

Also, this has nothing to do with the plot or the book itself but a pronunciation guide would have been gold. And some explaining regarding the honorifics system that was used because I felt like this was more cultural than particularly book related
